  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon horseradish (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Peel and slice the onions into bite-sized petals or wedges.
  2. Set up your breading station with three bowls: one for flour mixed with paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, and salt; one for buttermilk; and one for panko breadcrumbs.
  3. Dip each onion piece into the flour mixture, then buttermilk, followed by coating in panko breadcrumbs.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C). Fry the coated onion pieces in batches until golden brown (about 2–3 minutes).
  5. Drain on paper towels and serve warm with your zesty dipping sauce.
