  • 1 tablespoon avocado or vegetable oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • ½ pound Italian sausage (substituted with turkey if desired)
  • 1 onion (diced)
  • 6 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 (14 oz can) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (6 oz can) tomato paste
  • 1 (14 oz can) tomato sauce
  • 2 1/2 cups low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1 teaspoon fennel seeds
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 oz shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • ½ cup fresh parsley (chopped)

Instructions

  1. In a heavy-bottom pot, heat oil over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and Italian sausage, cooking until browned and onions are translucent (about 8 minutes). Stir in garlic and sauté until fragrant.
  2. Mix in tomato paste, crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, chicken broth, fennel seeds, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and let simmer for 20 minutes.
  3. Remove from heat and stir in mozzarella and Parmesan cheese until melted. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.
